Self-Portraits & Creative Writing

Self-Portraits:

We gave the girls the opportunity to paint portraits of themselves! But here’s the catch — we didn’t give them a mirror. The girls relied on what they knew of themselves and how they wanted to be portrayed, not what others viewed them as. If the girls did not feel comfortable painting themselves, we encouraged them to paint something that represented them: sports, pets, hobbies, activities, etc.

Creative Writing:

We also had the girls write short stories or poems about a topic of their choosing. They had creative freedom to experiment with length, rhyme, style, etc. One of our favorite poems was a young girl who wrote about how stepping outside the box let her be creative and have fun. “Don’t let the inside catch you!” she wrote.
